What is Book Arts?

Book Arts is a platform where artist, especially illustrators can express themselves and display their work through, usually handmade, books. Most books that are made this way are typically not massed produced, and at the most, very few are made at one time. This is because the artists spend vast amounts of time creating and executing their practice; this also making their works unique and limited. Book Arts is not only centred around illustration, but the folding of the paper is also of key importance. Taking extra care and going the extra mile to make sure the detailing is perfectly lined up and neat. These books can hold different techniques within them, they can be anywhere from drawn illustration to stamps, typography, collage and prints. By using these wide variety of materials, there is a market for large groups of people. There is more likely to be something for everyone as everyone has their own unique tastes, Book Arts simply caters for a large quantity of these.

One example of where Book Arts thrived was the Bristol Comic and Zine fair. It was a gathering of artists who came together to sell their own made artworks. There was a large range of styles present in at the fair, this allowing people with all different artistic tastes to find something they would enjoy. The most popular seller at this fair was the zines made. This just shows the popularity of this art form and indicates a growing demand for personal and limited edition art work.
